[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses big business in the
Republic of Korea with a special emphasis on the role of the
chaebol (conglomerates) that have been a key factor in the
country’s businesses successes and now its business and economic
problems. The processes and problems faced by the chaebol are
indicative of the role played by big business in the Republic of

Bolstering Taiwan's Economy Through Arms Procurement
[ send me this paper ]
A 35 page paper discussing changes in Taiwan's economy in the early years of the new century and the growing threat of mainland China. Taiwan's defense spending has declined dramatically over the past several years as there has been internal disagreement over the total cost of matching China's increased defenses. This paper reviews the course of economic history of Taiwan and the strained relations that continue between China and Taiwan even though the two are increasingly economically interdependent. It also demonstrates that renewed arms procurement activity in Taiwan would serve several purposes and would have the effect of bolstering Taiwan's economy as it moves from manufacturing to services, the natural progression of an increasingly maturing economy. Includes an abstract. Bibliography lists 24 sources.

Boosting Vietnam's Presence in the World Market
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper
discussing Vietnam's grudging and slow but inexorable shift to a free-market economy.
Vietnam remains communist and shares a border with China to the north. Though its leaders
want to remain true to the communist ideology for which so many died, they are faced with
the hard facts of the benefits of joining the emerging world economy. The paper examines the
economy as it is and the possibilities of taking a globalization route similar to that of South
Korea and Singapore: welcoming foreign investment, but according to strict rules set by the
government. Singapore provides a model of how the government does not need to yield its
ideology to foreign entities. It truly is possible for the government to remain in control of
philosophy while allowing the people to enjoy prosperity. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Border Conflicts Between Tibet and China
[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses the basic issues - political, economic, cultural - surrounding the border conflicts between China and Tibet. In October, 1950, little more than a year after the Communists gained full control of mainland China, their troops invaded Tibet. Now, nearly fifty years after the invasion, the Chinese still maintain their authority by armed force. They have redrawn the country's borders, incorporating huge swaths of Tibetan territory into Chinese provinces. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
