The Electronic Media: Possibilities for Misinformation and Misdirection
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page assertion that the electronic media is one of the most influential entities of the modern world. This paper cautions, however, that while we are most definitely better informed about current world events as a result of television and radio, we are also subject to manipulation by the media. In many ways it could be said that we are being lulled into a sense of complacency by the glowing light and ever present hum of the electronic media. This light and sound does not necessarily inform in so much as it blinds and deafens us to the realities of world events. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

The Emergence and Significance of the Superhero Films, Cartoons and Comics in the United States: World War II and the Cold War
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing the emergence and significance of the superhero comics, cartoons and films in the United States in World War II and the Cold War. Within the United States, superhero cartoons, comics and films shifted dramatically in both themes and popularity in World War II and again during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Suddenly, when it became obvious that the United States was becoming involved in the Pacific and Atlantic conflicts in World War II, superheroes who bestowed patriotic American virtues were used as propaganda in the war against the Japanese and the Nazis. Superheroes such as Superman and Captain America appeared on the battlefields with equally heroic super soldiers. The comics and cartoons supporting the American war effort were reinforced within the daily newspapers, cartoons, comics and films. After the war, comics which highlighted horrific and terrifying crime images were quickly shut down by the U.S. Senate Committee interested in maintaining American virtues and not corrupting American youth. During the 1950s and the 1960s, the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war increased and superheroes took on superpowers which allowed them to combat the “Red Threat” but remained out of the war zones due to the unpopular conflict in Vietnam. Regardless of the era, superheroes depicted in cartoons, comics and films have tried to reinforce the traditional American virtues and have remained increasingly popular using this format and have also remained important and significant on their influence and impact on the American public.

[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page contention that our communication styles have evolved from the critical to the functinalist over the past four decades. The author uses the examples of Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton to illustrate this evolution. While the credibility our nation’s most prominent individuals is sure to become even more laced with dramatism and propaganda, ultimately the American should tire of such theatrics and once again we will return to judging a speaker more on his or her credibility than on their theatrical style. The Historical Development of Television: Social and Cultural Uses and Impact
[ send me this paper ]
This is an 8 page paper discussing the history of television and its cultural impact. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact date as to when television was invented due to the multiple projects which occurred in technology in the 20th century, once television was introduced and accepted into modern households, the information industry has never been the same. Television has had a great impact on many cultural aspects of modern society. Televised events which were widely broadcasted and seen such as the Berlin Olympics in 1936, Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953 and the moon landing in 1969, all were experienced not by a single community but by an international community which formed unifying cultural significance globally. Many other events which previously would only have been seen or experienced on local levels were also nationally broadcast which in turn broadened the cultural understanding of many societies. With this global information however, television also brought several controversial elements in its popularity. Children and adults today watch a great deal of television on a daily basis and are highly influenced by advertising and violence depicted onscreen. In addition to concerns of overexposure and perception of television programs which may slowly be changing or accurately reflecting elements in society, other cultures are further alienated by Western programming as the communication structure is different from their own.
Bibliography lists 12 sources.
