Governor George Ryan’s Last Minute Commute of Death Sentences in Illinois: The Right of a Wrong or Just One More Aspect of Deeply Rooted Corruption?
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page overview of the corruption inherent in Ryan’s last minute decision to commute the death sentences of some of Illinois’ most contemptible criminals. The author approaches the death sentence from an ethical standpoint as being in the best interest of society as a whole. Despite the many improprieties which were demonstrated to exist in Illinois’ criminal justice system, Ryan’s decision to commute the death sentence of all death row inmates is inexcusable as he was elected to office by a public whose wishes were to instate and enforce capital punishment. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Gun Control / Why There Should be Standardized Laws Regarding the Purchase of Guns Across the United States
[ send me this paper ]
In 8 pages, the author discusses why there should be standardized laws regarding the purchase of guns across the nation. Gun laws from state to state differ considerably. This causes a number of problems. In one state a weapon in a vehicle must be in plain sight, while in another, the weapon must be hidden. Some states have stricter gun laws than other states, which can make it very dangerous for travelers of stricter areas when commuting to those areas that almost everyone is permitted to carry a gun. Because of the discrepancies between state laws, gunrunning, or the illegal transportation of weapons from one state to another, is also a problem. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Historical Development of Prisons
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page research paper that discusses the rise of the modern prison in the nineteenth century. David Garland, in his 1990 text Punishment and Modern Society, argues that the “’social meaning of punishment is badly understood’” and that a “’a pluralistic, multidimensional approach’” is required in order to fully comprehend the historical development of contemporary penal systems (Harcourt, 2007, p. 307). Therefore, this research explores the positions of various social theorists in order to gain a broad view of how and why prisons developed as the prevalent punishment strategy during the nineteenth century. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

History of Capital Punishment
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report was written to be used as the background material for an informative speech to be given on the history of capital punishment. How a Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree Contributes to My Career Goals
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper discussing the benefits of a bachelor's degree. Certainly it is possible to function in the criminal justice system without knowledge of the in-depth subjects that can be addressed in pursuit of a bachelor's degree, but growing complexity of situations; increased attention to ethical decision-making; and the need to assess situations on their own merit increasingly point to the baccalaureate degree as being preferable over the shorter, more technically-oriented associate's degree. How Prerelease Programs Help Alleviate Crime In Society
[ send me this paper ]

How, If At All, Should Mental Illness Be Taken Into Account In Determining Punishment?
[ send me this paper ]
14 pages in length. The penal system has been no help in alleviating the stigma attached to mental illness, routinely and historically treating mentally unstable inmates with just the same harsh approach as their criminally insane counterparts. Indeed, the distinction between these two populations is significant; however, authorities have long been reluctant to entertain such a concept. Similar to the treatment availed to them in institutions, mentally ill inmates have a history of being shackled, beaten and deprived of the most basic human needs. One might readily argue how state and federal penitentiaries exist for one reason and one reason only: to lock up the criminal and throw away the key. The conspicuous absence of rehabilitation programs speaks to the attitude society openly harbors about its convicted felons – keep them out of sight forever. Only recently has the idea of rehabilitation over incarceration been considered throughout contemporary correctional institutions as an alternative toward addressing the imprisoned mentally ill, a population many believe are deserving of this option because of their blatant lack of free will in making morally responsible choices. Annotated bibliography lists 8 sources.
