Air Pollution In Mexico City
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Considered to be one of the world's most polluted cities, Mexico City has long experienced the detrimental impact of its overwhelming air pollution problem. The most prominent pollutant throughout the city is automobile exhaust, which still to this day maintains high concentration levels of lead from before gasoline went lead-free. Sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide present two additional pollutants hanging in the air over Mexico City, as well, proving "very difficult to control and are still very worrisome from the point of view of the health effects…because they penetrate deeply into the lungs" (Air Pollution: Mexico City). This inability to dissipate such toxic substances is due to the city's proximity; a synergistic combination of high altitude and abundant sunlight create an "ideal environment for these dangerous compounds to accumulate and linger" (Air Pollution: Mexico City), ultimately proving extraordinarily damaging to the ozone. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Air pollution: Problems and Solutions
[ send me this paper ]
This 16 page paper addresses a variety of aspects of air pollution. Beginning with basic definitions, air pollution is clearly defined and various types of pollution are explored. Both indoor and outdoor pollution are discussed as significant problems. Causes are also addressed, including both human and natural varieties. The problems of cattle, lightening and volcanoes are noted as causes. Next, the exact effects of pollution are explained, inclusive of some documentation that poor air quality can lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The idea that air pollution is worse in the undeveloped world is highlighted and it is concluded that perhaps an economic or political solution will ultimately help to clean up the air. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Al Gore’s "Earth in the Balance"
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper reviewing this work by former US vice president Gore. Gore’s publisher places on the book jacket glowing terms such as “intellectual brilliance” and “impeccable scholarship” to describe the contents of Gore’s 1992 work. The positions and sentiments that Gore presents in the work are admirable and do indeed deserve greater attention before the world of the future transforms itself into the present. Gore’s suggestions are so unworkable, however, that even Gore himself abandoned all but the rhetoric throughout his eight years as Vice President, during which time he had immense opportunity to, in essence, “put his money where his mouth is.” As has been the case with so many other self-styled “environmentalists,” Gore has demonstrated that there is little semblance between what he writes in the pages of “Earth in the Balance” and what he, as politician, businessman and individual, chooses to practice. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses Vice President and presidential candidate Al Gore’s views on the issues associated withthe environment. It is one issue has made it abundantly clear that Al Gore has a front-runner position over George W. Bush. From his years in Congress, his authorship of a truly significant book detailing environmental concerns facing America and the world (the 1992 epic, Earth in the Balance), to his actions as Vice President, Gore has demonstrated his commitment to the preservation and protection of the planet’s fragile environmental systems. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Al Gore: The Right Place at the Right Time
[ send me this paper ]
This 20 page paper explores Al Gore, Jr. and his political life. When Gore was nominated for the vice presidency in 1992, his father unabashedly told The New York Times that "we raised him for it." If this were not an election year, and we were to look at the life of Al Gore, Jr. We would say that his is truly an American success story. For the American body politic, he has been at the right place, at the right time. Gore has had a political lifetime "making it happen." Bibliography lists 13sources.

Aldous Huxley/Island
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper that discusses and analyzes Aldous Huxley's last novel, Island. This novel describes a Utopian society that, in many ways, anticipated the current debates concerning sustainable growth, ecological concerns and criticism of the rampant industrialization and consumerism that has shaped so much of Western society. Basically, in this novel, Huxley offers an alternative vision to the horrors that he has warned his readers about in his earlier works, that is, over population, coercive politics, militarism, industrialization and the destruction of the environment. Examination of novel brings up the question as to whether Huxley is a prophet, a visionary or a dreamer? No additional sources cited.

Alewife Management And Ecology
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The water sources of late are clearly demonstrating the consequences of overwhelming pollution and encroachment by killing off a significant percentage of alewife, which, in turn, serves to threaten those species that depend upon the fish species as a primary food source. What is being done to correct this drastic situation is too little too late according to critics, who contend that the alewife population, once so plentiful that the only implement necessary to catch them was a spoon, struggles for survival against pollution and man's encroachment upon fast disappearing spawning grounds. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

All Creation is Groaning/A Vision of Ecology
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page book review. All Creation is Groaning, An Interdisciplinary Vision for Life in a Sacred Universe (1999), edited by Carol Dempsey and Russell Butkus, is a fascinating anthology of essays that collectively offer an alternative vision of the environment, the current ecological crisis and the role of humanity within this complex web. This is truly a multidisciplinary text, as the its title indicates, as the contributors each present arguments that pertain to their particular field and perspective. However, basic themes can be found that run throughout these essays and which serve to illuminate the vision that is the overall point of the book. This review follows several of these themes in order to evaluate the degree of success that the editors achieve in presenting a persuasive, cohesive argument for their defining vision and the reviewer concludes that the editors achieve this purpose. No additional sources cited.
