Argentina: An Economic Nightmare
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page review of the historical and contemporary reasons behind the current state of economic strife being experienced in Argentina. This paper emphasizes that while Latin America’s “free market avatar” may have been hoped to have been a shining model of a republic but the free market simply has not worked. While the wealthy have benefited, the commoner has only fallen deeper and deeper into the economic rut which now characterizes the entire country. The author reviews factors ranging from the inverse relationship in export and import, the adverse role of the International Monetary Fund, and the internal politics of Argentina which have led to this state. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Armando Morales
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the life and work of Nicaraguan-born painter Armando Morales (1927 - ). His paintings have a duplicitous nature to them to the point that one wonders if they are paintings of statues or if they are subjects portrayed as still and stationary as sculpture. Three of his paintings -- Nature morte: Pommes, poires, olives (1984), Oracle sur Managua: Hommage a Ernesto Cardenal (1989), and Trois Baigneuses en se Deshabillant (1994) -- are considered. Asian Status in the Dominican Republic
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page paper discusses the history of the Dominican Republic and its struggles with its neighbor Haiti, and how these incursions led the Dominican dictator Trujillo to invite first Spanish, and then Japanese, immigrants to settle on the island. It also discusses the fact that the conditions that the newcomers found were substantially different from those they had been promised, and that both the Japanese government and that of the Dominican Republic failed to given the newcomers the support they needed. Aymara: Cultural Identity Disintegration?
[ send me this paper ]
36 pages in length. The disintegration of cultural identity for Chile and Bolivia's indigenous Aymara reflects yet another cog in the wheel of global progress, which for some is no progress at all. The inherent struggle for cultural survival is not a new challenge for the Aymara peoples; however, the perpetual fight against succumbing to complete disintegration has become more and more difficult to overcome due to factors of globalization, technological advancement and the blatant circumvention of human rights. According to an Aymara man: "This is a fight between two cultures. One is a culture of life. One is a culture of death. In the West they seem to have lost the value of this culture of life, which has not been totally lost in Latin America." Bibliography lists 27 sources.

Bahamian Immigration Policy
[ send me this paper ]
This 25 page paper discusses Bahamian immigration policy, and finds that it is neither fair nor "transparent," but instead appears to be unfairly applied in some cases. Further, because of The Bahamas as a location for offshore banking, it attracts wealthy people who appear able to "jump the line" for residency. In addition, companies complain that they are unable to hire the workers they need because of the stringent immigration regulations, which have the effect of barring foreign workers from specialized positoins; however, because there is no college in the island, native Bahamians often have few of the skills necessary for these jobs, leaving companies with the necessity of cutting their workforce, often throwing native Bahamians out of work. Finally, the paper considers the huge problem of illegal immigrants, mostly Haitians, and their impact on The Bahamas. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Banana Production in Costa Rica
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing changes occurring in banana culture during the decade of the 1990s. Costa Rica's experience with altering its banana
production process illustrates that environmental concerns need not be limited only to fully developed nations. A much better path is that of preventing environmental destruction and
depletion, particularly in nations largely dependent on agricultural exports for much of the national income. The case also demonstrates that it is not only young companies that can learn and innovate. Chiquita is more than 100 years old, and it led the industrial way in altering banana
culture practice. Includes 2 maps. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
